Project Background

In an attempt to modernise the educational system, the General Education Department decided to conduct software based examination for the students of 9th standard. The idea was to teach computers using computers and not using paper and pen. It was for the first time in the history of education in India that such an attempt was made. Soft Exam 1.0 was thus introduced for conducting online examination for the 9th standard students in around 2800 schools in Kerala.

Requirement

A software solution was needed for conducting examinations in computer. The solution needed to be available in CDs to be installed at all schools. It should be capable of tracking the activities done by the student in office packages like Microsoft Office and Open Source Open Office. The software was required to be available in such a way that there shouldn’t be any security lapses. Also it was needed within a very short period of time.

SoftExam 1.0 has two main modules – theory examination module and practical examination module. The software randomly generates questions and ensures that no two students get the same questions. In the theory part, 20 questions are randomly selected from a pool of 600 questions. These are multiple choice questions. The student needs to select the best answer from the choices. The software records the answers inputted by each student in its database. In the practical section, there are 130 practical questions as the student gets 3 questions (one each from topics like Word Processing, Spreadsheet and Presentation) from this pool. There are two sections viz, Microsoft Office and OpenOffice. The student can choose any one between these two sections. The software tracks the tasks performed on these applications by the student and evaluates the student’s performance. Tracking is done on Office applications like MS Word, MS Excel, MS PowerPoint, OpenOffice Writer, OpenOffice Calc and OpenOffice Impress. SoftExam 1.0 then compares these with the correct operations and evaluates the performance of each student. SoftExam also has features to retrieve results, prepare certificates, printing of results / certificates, exporting / importing of results etc. Questions are encrypted for data security.
